Shocking Reasons for Strikes in Kenyan Campuses

Written By Jane Njeri Thuo

Since Kenya's independence in 1963,there has been several strikes in institutions of higher learning-some mild and others severe leading even to death. Magazine reel decided to go out and do a a research on why students strike and damage property. Here are some of the major reasons that we were found out:

1. Helb Loan.

Most students in public universities are JAB students and this means that they depend on the government for funds to pat their tution fees and their upkeep in campus. Since the double intake of students from 2012 there has been a strain on funding and this as a result has led to major strikes.

2. Restrictions on visiting female hostels.

Campus students are mature and will not relent from striking when the administration starts coming up with contagious restrictions. Some institutions have policies like "No Male past 10" but they fear enforcing it to the latter since the comrades will strike and strike hard.

3. Elections.

Its is highly likly ti hear strike during campaigns, actual voting day or after voting day.As a matter of fact every voting is done in the presence of police officers ready for anything. These are the most violent student unrest and the most danerous

4. Fear of Exams.

Sometimes there for petty reasons like this.Students forget campus life can be so sweet with a lot of fredom and at the same time bitter. One enjoys themselves and tend to forget that there a student but when the exams are around the corner, students realise that they do not have no notes nor have they read hence are totally unprepared.

This is when some hatch a plan and start a fire or something just to ensure exams are postponed. If that happens then that is a mission complete to them.
