Schoolgirls Arrested For Planning To Burn Their Dormitory

Eight students of Gikumene Secondary School in Meru County have been arrested for planning to burn a dormitory.The students were on Tuesday held at Meru police station as investigations over plans to set the dormitory on fire continued.

The arrests came after two students were seen on Sunday evening buying petrol at a filling station at Gitimbine area in Meru County.

Meru OCPD Sammy Koskey said one petrol station attendant called the principal to inquire why the students were buying the petrol.

“The principal alerted the watchmen and they started searching where the petrol was being hidden. They were forced to set a trap on Monday night to see who will collect the petrol,” Mr Koskey said.

He added that at around 10.30pm, when the lights were switched off, one of the watchmen hid next to where the petrol was being hidden .

“At around 11.00pm one girl was seen heading to where the container was. When she noted that someone was around she started screaming for help. We were immediately notified by the principal and after a long conversations between the student and the principal she was able to name others,” the OCPD added.

He added that two students were in Form One while six others were in Form Two.

“We are investigating the issue and I urge everyone to be conscious of such incidents and report them immediately to the police to avoid loss of properties or even lives,” he said.

Last month, Katheri Boys high School and Nkuene in Meru County were closed indefinitely after their dormitories were burnt down and properties worth thousands of shillings destroyed,the tudents were suspected to have started the infernos.
