Scare at Maasai Mara University after stranger is found in hostel

With the current wave of insecurity in the country and terror scares directed to various bulidings and institutions, their has been increased alarm and panic even over very trivial events like explosions of transformers. This recently saw the panic at UON- Kikuyu campus that led to the death of one and injury of over a hundred students. To avoid this kind of mess the public should be educated on what to do incase of a disaster. This is because lack of preparedness causes more deaths and injuries than if the public was trained.

In Narok, Kenya: Students at the Maasai Mara University on Wednesday spent the night outside their rooms after it was reported that a stranger had been arrested in one of the hostels. This led other students to leave the campus and go to spend the night outside after a rumour went round that there was an imminent terror attack.

Maasai Mara University Student Director of Security and Accommodation Erick Serem said the stranger was arrested as a result of heightened vigilance among the students following the Garissa terror attack. "The stranger, who was arrested, claimed that he was going to the mosque. Students alerted the security officers who apprehended him and handed him to the police," said Serem.

He said the information of arrest immediately spread at the university causing panic. Narok County Police commander Abdi Galgalo and Administration Police Commander Paul Kerich confirmed that they are interrogating the suspect and allayed fears that the person arrested was a terrorist. "It is true that we have one person in our custody. We want to laud students who identified the stranger and alerted us in time," said Galgalo. He said security has been beefed up in most parts of the county and appealed to members of the public to be extra vigilant.

If it were not for the vigilance among the students, maybe the stranger could not be apprehended and maybe he could have caused damage to the Campus and/or Students. The saying once bitten twice shy is indeed true.
