The Kenya Schools and Colleges Music festival this year were held at the Lake Side city of Kisumu between August 2nd and 12th.There were very many performances that impressed but what stole the show was Mount Kenya University Brass Band.

On Wednesday received a standing ovation for a brass band performance during the national music festival which closes on Thursday.

The group presented selected melodies that Kenyans have come to associate with the popular police band, and one would have been forgiven for believing they were “watching the real thing”.

The university received praise for investing in talent, costumes, instruments and training.

The presentation at Kisumu Girls High School Hall was the only one in the brass band category.

The team of 15 also had a good gender balance, according to the adjudicators, making all members of the audience identify with the performance.

University of Eastern Africa-Baraton overwhelmed other institutions in the instrumental Violin Solo, Piano Duo and Guitar solo.

In the Woodwind Solo performances, which had the highest entries for the first time, Kenyatta University’s Daniel Zalo emerged tops.

He was followed by Edmond Obilah of Technical University of Kenya and Enoch Migiro of University of Eastern Africa-Baraton. The two tied at second position.

Kenyatta University’s Samuel Mutuka and Francis Kilyungu of Technical University of Kenya tied at third position.

Zetech University emerged winner in the Drum Ensemble Own Choice category. Masinde Muliro University won in the Violin Solo Own Choice category. University of Eastern Africa-Baraton was second.

The universities were performing in the second last day of this year’s Kenya National Music Festival.

This indeed shows that talent can be nurtured if an individual is given a chance and a platform to showcase it.
