Kemu students injured during security drill

Several students and staff at Kenya Methodist University's main campus in Meru Town were injured during a police security drill on Wednesday. Most of those injured were scampering for safety, fearing that the university had been attacked by terrorists after hearing gunshots.

The number of those injured was yet to be confirmed. There was panic at the campus and in neighbouring estates after police shot in the air during the drill at 3.30pm.

Security agencies were conducting a mock drill to check the alertness of students and employees at the university.

Speaking to the Nation by phone, Imenti North Administration Police Commander Peter Karanja said most students and staff were not aware of the mock exercise.

“The university administration was aware, but most of the staff members and students were not informed.”

“The aim of the drill was to check the alertness of students and staff members, and their response, especially during this time when the country is experiencing terror threats” he said.

The university plans to hold its 15th graduation ceremony on Saturday.

Mr Karanja said some students fled from the campus after the incident.

He said police officers would remain at the university to reassure students returning to the university after fleeing.
