Joy as Kaimosi Teachers Training College lifts drama title

Kaimosi Teachers Training College have been crowned the overall winners in the colleges’ category at the national drama festivals in Nakuru. It was song and dance for the trainee teachers as they lifted the trophy at Nakuru Town’s Melvin Jones Hall on Sunday night.

Performances by TTCs, initially regarded as poor compared to those by secondary schools and universities, showed great improvement this year with well-scripted pieces that were entertaining and educative.

Most items showcased were contemporary and addressed the country’s concerns, said adjudicators Fredrick Shitubi, Rashid Mohamed and Charles Gatere.

But, still, a good number of the TTCs’ items lacked originality as they had simply "copy-pasted" past scripts used by various secondary schools that failed to make it to the nationals.

A case in point was in the narrative category, where performers evidently adapted "Otonglo Time" a piece by Daniel Owira, the Highway Secondary School student who won the hearts of many, including President Uhuru Kenyatta with his outstanding narrative in the festivals last year.

The attempt at imitating Owira’s captivating Luo accent came out horribly and left a sour taste in the mouths of many.

According to the adjudicators, many items addressed insecurity, national healing and reconciliation issues. They hailed most items as have had high quality acting but advised on the need to improve on scripting especially in  plays and verses.

The overall winner’s trophy lifted by Kaimosi was donated by Mount Kenya University Vice Chancellor Stanley Waudo.

Egoji Teachers Training College were the winners in the play category, followed by Kaimosi and Kibabii Diploma College while In the dance category Eregi TTC were the winners, followed by Kericho TTC and Kaimosi.

Asumbi TTC  carried the day in the stand-up comedy and modern dance categories. They were followed by Bondo TTC and Kenya Technical Training College in the modern dance category.

In the solo verse category, Kericho were the winners, followed by KTTC and Thogoto.
