Fire burns down Chebisaas High School

Property of unknown value belonging to 128 students of AIC Chebisaas Boys High School in Uasin Gishu was Tuesday destroyed after a fire broke out in the morning. Uasin Gishu County Director of Education Rebecca Butalanyi said the fire broke out at around 5:30am when the students were in class for morning preps.

"This incident is so unfortunate and we are treating it as an accident. There are no causalities because the fire broke out when the students were in class for preps," said Butalanyi when she addressed Journalists at the school.

Students remained in their classes in the morning after breakfast as the board of management convened a crisis meeting to discuss the way forward.

Eldoret scene of crime officers arrived in the school to investigate the cause of the fire.

“Everything here is calm. The school programme will go on as usual. The school’s board of management will give the students the way forward but we shall not close down the school,” Ms Butalanyi said.

She, however, appealed to well-wishers to step in and help the affected students.

“At the moment, we are calling upon well-wishers to come out with whatever they can to help the students because they need bedding, uniforms and other personal effects as they have lost everything in the fire,” she explained.

Kimumu Ward Member of County Assembly Samuel Ruto thanked the county fire brigade for responding in time to the incident.

“I want to appreciate the Uasin Gishu County Fire Brigade team for responding swiftly to our calls and rushing here on time to help the students, staff members and the public to contain the fire even though nothing was salvaged,” said Mr Ruto.

The school’s Principal Barnabas Too said that they were doing their own investigations to establish the cause of the fire.

“This is not the first time that this dormitory has been razed.

“In 2008 it got burnt in the same way and we renovated the whole building but we are going to do our own investigations to get to know the real cause of the fire,” said Mr Too.

The school is located 8 kilometres from Eldoret Town along the Eldoret-Ziwa road and neighbours the University of Eldoret.
