Education PS Opposes Students’ Suspension

Written By Jane Njeri Thuo

For a long time now,the subject of punishment in schools has been debated by different quarters. This has led to different opinions being voiced out but with no conclusive ending to the subject. This may be the reason why Education Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang has said that schools should come up with other ways of punishing indisciplined students and not by sending them home.

The Education PS has said guidance and counseling should be incorporated in schools to help instill discipline in students. He also said that some of the negative behaviour students exhibited were caused by their parents.

“Instead of expelling students from schools, we should in fact be thinking of expelling parents from their homes for failing to exercise their parental duties responsibly,” said the PS.

Dr. Kipsang made these remarks when he officially closed a two-day sensitization programme for Education managers of from the County Education Boards of Nairobi, Kiambu, Machakos and Kajiado.

The PS, who was accompanied by the Director for Field and Other Services Mrs. Margaret Murage and USAID’S Education Program Management Specialist Lillian Gangla, said the basic responsibility of disciplining children lies with parents.

Dr. Kipsang  said some of the undesirable behaviors students had were modeled on their parents and wondered why the students should be punished for the faults of their parents.

He observed that as members of CEBs, they were the custodians of education.

“You should guard against and eliminate radicalization of students by ensuring that teachers stuck to the prescribed curriculum in teaching.”

He challenged them to look beyond registering schools and ensure the curriculum delivered to produce the desired outcomes in students.
