Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi bans classes before 7am

It is customary for schools in different parts of the country to start classes as early as 6 am. But now learners are prohibited from arriving in school before 7.15am under new rules from the Education ministry. The rules, enacted this year, also state that public and private schools will run from Monday to Friday.

The class hours will run from 8am to 3.30pm, while 3.30pm to 4.45pm will be time for co-curricular activities.

The regulations were published last week by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi. This regulation will also make it an offence for a boarding school to send away an unaccompanied learner later than 9am.

Boarding schools will run for 24 hours every day, but lessons will take place between 8am and 3.30pm. From 3.30pm to 4.45pm co-curricular activities will take place, Monday to Friday, while 5pm to 7.30pm is time for “self-direct” activities, state the rules.

Students in boarding schools will start their prep at 7.30pm and finish at 9.30pm from Monday to Friday. They will rest until 6am. The latest reporting time for learners in a boarding school will be 5pm.

The regulations also prescribe a government-approved curriculum for institutions of alternative, basic, adult and continuing education. Learners above the age of 18 will only be admitted to an institution of alternative basic, adult and continuing education.

This moves have been received both positivly and negativly, only time will tell if they will stand and if they will beneficial to the education system in the country.
